You name it, we’ve handled, stored or moved it.

As times have evolved so has our vision for staying relevant. Merchants Transfer Company started as a third party warehouse at the Alabama State Docks. Now with over 2.2-million square feet of warehouse space in three strategic locations, we have slowly become known as a dependable International Logistics company with the ability to move the world forward.

A storied past.

Our History

  • 1904 – Founded several generations ago as a warehousing and moving company located on the Alabama State Docks. The primary commodities handled were bananas and coffee imported from the islands.

  • 1960’s – Scott Paper built the largest pulp and paper mill in the world at the time in Mobile, AL. Merchants Transfer contracted with Scott to build and operate warehouses for the plant. The initial building was 100,000 square feet and is located at the current site of Merchants Transfer Headquarters.

  • 1970’s-80’s – Scott Paper continues to grow in Mobile and Merchants Transfer grew with them adding a total of 1.2 million dedicated square feet. Scott paper had become Merchant’s Transfers primary customer.
  • 1990’s – Scott Paper, facing a tough economic and competitive climate, was taken over by the Kimberly Clark Corporation and, over time, outside warehousing was moved to Atlanta. This was an extremely challenging time for Merchants Transfer being left with empty warehouse space and few customers. The challenge provided an opportunity for reinvention as a true Public 3PL Provider.

  • 2008 – APM Terminals opened Mobile’s first autonomous Container Terminal. This opened the door for Merchants Transfer to handle import and export warehousing opportunities from around the world.

  • 2019 and beyond – As APM Terminals Mobile becomes one of the premier container terminals on the Gulf Coast, Merchants is addressing needs and growing with it. We have expanded to over 2,000,000 square feet of warehouse space handling products ranging from pulp & paper to chemicals, to bulk commodities for the steel industry and everything in between.
